Sleep Through Your Dental Appointment

Wouldn't it be wonderful to sleep through your dental appointment?

No stress, no pain, just complete relaxation. If that sounds like a plan, sedation dentistry to the rescue.

Many, many people are terrified at the prospect of going to the dentist. Maybe they had a bad experience at some point and the fear of repeating it has kept them from getting even routine dental care.

IV sedation has been used for some time for very fearful patients. My father always had it because Novacaine had no effect on him. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) can also alleviate fear, but what if you could just take a pill and doze blissfully through your visit?

Today, you can.

Keep in mind, the pill will not knock you completely out. Some level of consciousness is required for safety as well as compliance to instructions, but most patients report having no memory of the actual procedure. If you are afraid of needles, take heart. Although local anesesthetic is usually needed as well, you won't remember the needle.

Most dentists who use sedation dentistry are committed to making the experience as painless and stress free as possible. Some even have tempur pedic dental chairs to ensure your utmost comfort. Music is relaxing and many dentists have televisions on the ceiling today. You may never want to leave.

Patients who have a positive experience are much more likely to return for routine visits. Years of neglect can be corrected in a few appointments and once you experience sedation dentistry, you'll be back.
